I have been working in interdisciplinary vascular medicine for 28 years now. I started with innovations in phlebology in 1999, being among the first pioneers of endovenous therapy. I was different from others, I was on my own as the founder of a private clinic – 100% responsible for everything my patients experienced. So, I did not publish academic papers, but worked hard every day on improvements. From my pre-medical studies in physics I knew a lot about lasers, so I went to optimize their use in veins. Nobody showed me how to do tumescent anesthesia, so I had different ideas how to do it, which, it turned out, were responsible for much better results. Years later, I invented percutaneous valvuloplasty and venoplasty which are already of great benefit today. I invented the transparent film bandage and obtained incredible results with sclerofoam. Over the years and with tens of thousands of patients, many more improvements resulted from our own scientific research, which are now gradually finding their way to industrial distribution. I sold the intellectual property to stay free from business complications. I am not sitting back proudly, however, as there is so much more to do – such as developing early stage diagnosis, or endovenous valve repair. Today, my teams in Berlin, Munich and Zurich and a growing number of international colleagues are cooperating on a private basis with the intention to improve phlebology.
